The 2GB base
Every server needs memory just to boot the Java runtime, load the world spawn, and keep the core game running before a single player joins. 2GB is a safe, lag-free floor for a modern version.
0.1GB per player
Each connected player loads chunks around them and adds entities, inventories, and activity. About 0.1GB per player — roughly 1GB for every 10 players — is a reliable rule of thumb for typical survival play.
Server-type modifier
Plugins and mods load extra content into memory. The heavier your setup, the more you add:

Why we round up
Running out of RAM causes far worse lag than having a little spare, and hosts sell whole-GB plans anyway. Rounding up to the next whole gigabyte gives you safe headroom for activity spikes.
Why hosts often recommend more
If a hosting company's own "recommended plan" tool suggests more RAM than we do, remember: a bigger plan earns them more money. Our number targets smooth, lag-free performance with sensible headroom — not the biggest possible sale. If you expect heavy activity, rounding up one tier is always safe.
Caveats
This is a well-calibrated estimate, not a guarantee. A very high view distance, huge redstone builds, hundreds of plugins, or a massive pre-generated world can push you higher. When in doubt, give a little extra.
